Mysore is located in the foothills of the Chamundi Hills about 145.2 km towards the southwest of Bangalore.It served as the capital city of the Kingdom of Mysore for nearly six centuries from 1399 until 1956. The Kingdom was ruled by the Wadiyar dynasty Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali also contributed significantly to the cultural and economic growth of the city and the state by planting mulberry trees introducing silk in the region.Mysore is noted for its heritage structures and palaces, including the Mysore Palace, and for the festivities that take place during the Dasara festival when the city receives many tourists from around the world.

Geography

Mysore is located at 12.30°N 76.65°E and has an average altitude of 770 metres (2,526 ft). It is spread across an area of 128.42 km2 (50 sq mi):4 at the base of the Chamundi Hills in the southern region of Karnataka.It has several lakes, like the Karanji.

People

People of Mysuru are known as Mysoreans in English and Mysoorinavaru in Kannada, regional Language. Mysore is the third most populous city in the state of Karnataka.Among them Majority of residents are Hindus.

Culture

Mysore is cultural capital of Karnataka. Mysore was the capital of the Wodeyar kings who ruled over the Mysore Kingdom for many centuries. Wodeyars were great patrons of art and music and have contributed significantly to make Mysore a cultural centre.

Environment

Mysore has a tropical savanna climate bordering on a hot semi-arid climate under the Köppen climate classification. The main seasons are Summer from March to June, the monsoon season from July to November and winter from December to February.
